Portable Layout
The club’s HO portable layout is constructed of modular design, but is not constructed to normal modular standards. Sections are either 2′ x 4′ or 2′ x 6′ with a few modules 30” deep. Modules are wooden frame with mostly foam construction. When assembled the layout can attain a maximum size of 20′ by 36′. The majority of the modules are club owned, but some club members have constructed and detailed their own sections. Except for a few member owned modules, the layout is hauled in a club owned trailer. Club, but mostly members, trains are used on the layout when we operate it, and once you are a member, you are welcome to join us and enjoy showing off your trains and promoting the hobby at public events.
The layout has two parallel main lines and a separate branch line that is 3 inches higher and 14 inches back of the main lines. The branch line is duel gauge track – both HO & HOn3, and both gauges are operated simultaneously. The two lower main lines and the upper dual gauge are all analog and DCC compatible with a Digitrax DCC system. Various members have sceniced the modules and most are rural scenes, one is a two section logging scene, several have bridges, and one six foot module is complete with a tunnel and two large trestles over a three foot deep canyon.
The club takes this layout to various train shows in the Dayton area. Usually the layout is set up at 10-12 shows a year, including: University of Dayton ‘s Christmas on Campus in December; the two Springfield OH Model Train Shows at the Clark County Fairgrounds; the Spring and Fall Model Train Swap Meets at the Darke Co. Fairgrounds in Greenville OH; the Model Train Swap Meet at the Montgomery Co. Fairgrounds in Dayton OH; the NMRA Division 3 Train Show at Hara Arena in Dayton OH; the Carlisle Railroad Days in Carlisle OH; the Rail Festival at Carillon Park in Dayton OH.
